At the StartWell Foundation, we’re always working to ensure that our StartWell Grow cereal offers the best possible nutrition for growing children in South Africa. Our dietician Maria van der Merwe has recently reviewed our vitamin and mineral premix and suggested a few key improvements. With her insights and with careful consideration of the nutritional needs of local children, we’ve adjusted the micronutrient formulation for the StartWell Grow recipe.

“Our goal is to ensure that each 50g serving provides 30-50% of the Harmonized Average vitamin and mineral Requirements (H-ARs) that are essential for children aged 4 years and older. This means that the children will receive a substantial portion of their necessary daily nutrients, supporting their growth and development with every bite!”

So, what are H-ARs, and why do they matter?

H-ARs (Harmonized Average Requirements) are nutrient guidelines that reflect the average amount of a nutrient needed to meet the needs of 50% of healthy individuals in a specific group. They help create solid, science-based dietary recommendations.

Many South African children may lack key nutrients like iron, zinc, vitamins A and D in their diet. Ensuring that kids get 30-50% of these requirements in a single serving can make a real difference.

Besides providing bioavailable proteins, micronutrients are critical for growth, brain development and a healthy immune system. Many children are not receiving enough of these nutrients from their everyday diet.

By providing these key nutrients in just one serving of StartWell Grow, we’re helping fill that gap in a simple, convenient, tasty and affordable way!

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue this journey to bring the best nutrition to your family!
